Bible verses for when you're angry
Scripture does not tell you to stop being angry. It tells you not to let anger make your decisions. These ten verses are mostly about timing — being slow to speak, not letting the sun go down on it, leaving what is fair to God. The prayers beside them are for the gap between feeling it and acting on it.
“A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.”Proverbs 29:11 · KJV
A prayer
God, I want to say everything I'm thinking right now. Help me hold some of it back instead. Not everything true needs to be said in this moment. Give me the wisdom to know what to keep. Amen.

The verse above rotates daily. Here is the whole set, each with its prayer.
-
“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:”
Ephesians 4:26 · KJVGod, I'm angry right now, and I don't think that's the problem by itself. What I do with it is what worries me. Help me not let this sit and rot into something worse by tonight. Give me a way to let it go before I sleep. Amen.
-
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:”
Ephesians 4:31 · KJVGod, I can feel this turning into something bitter. I don't want to carry it that long. Help me put it down before it hardens into something uglier. I'd rather be free of it than right about it. Amen.
-
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”
James 1:19 · KJVGod, I want to react right now, and that's exactly why I shouldn't yet. Help me listen before I speak. Slow me down enough to actually hear what's happening. I'd rather be slow and right than fast and sorry. Amen.
-
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”
Proverbs 15:1 · KJVGod, I know what I want to say, and it isn't soft. Help me find a gentler way to say the true thing. I don't want to pour gasoline on this. Give me the version of this that actually helps. Amen.
-
“A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.”
Proverbs 29:11 · KJVGod, I want to say everything I'm thinking right now. Help me hold some of it back instead. Not everything true needs to be said in this moment. Give me the wisdom to know what to keep. Amen.
-
“Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.”
Psalms 37:8 · KJVGod, this anger is starting to feel like fretting more than clarity. Help me set it down instead of feeding it. I don't want it to turn into something I regret. Quiet this in me before I act on it. Amen.
-
“He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.”
Proverbs 14:29 · KJVGod, I don't feel patient right now, and I want to be. Help me take a breath before I respond. Understanding feels harder than reacting, but I want it more. Slow me down long enough to actually think. Amen.
-
“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
Romans 12:19 · KJVGod, part of me wants to make this even somehow. Help me leave that to you instead of taking it into my own hands. I don't have to fix what's fair right now. That's not my job tonight. Amen.
-
“Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.”
1 Peter 3:9 · KJVGod, I want to respond in kind to how I was treated. Help me choose a better way, even though it's harder. I don't want to become what upset me in the first place. Give me the strength to answer differently. Amen.
-
“Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.”
Philippians 4:5 · KJVGod, I don't want this anger to be the loudest thing about me right now. Help me stay level, even while I'm still upset. Remind me you're close, not far off watching me struggle with this. Steady me before I speak or act. Amen.
