About SimpleBible

Most writing about the Bible assumes you already know the vocabulary. It assumes you know who the Psalms were written for, why Paul was in prison, or what a covenant is. If you did not grow up in church, that assumption puts a wall in front of a text you were told is for everyone.

SimpleBible exists to take that wall down. We write short, plain explanations of what a passage says, who it was written to, and what it has been understood to mean — without pretending the difficult parts are simple.

What we publish

• Verse explanations. What a well-known passage meant in its own setting, and how that changes the way it is usually quoted.
• Topic collections. Passages grouped by what someone is actually going through, with the context that stops them being read as slogans.
• Prayers. Words you can borrow when you cannot find your own.

Where we stand

We are not writing from inside one denomination and we are not trying to settle arguments that have been open for centuries. Where a passage is genuinely disputed, we say it is disputed and set out the main readings. Where the text is plain, we say that too.

We quote from public-domain translations — chiefly the World English Bible, the King James Version and the Berean Standard Bible — so that anyone can copy, share and reuse what they find here without a licensing problem.

The app

SimpleBible is also a free Android app: one verse and one short prayer a day, with somewhere to write down what you are asking for. The writing here and the app come from the same place, and neither requires the other.
